The Guard

Its original name was La Guarda de Navarra, because the place was chosen by King Sancho Abarca to build a fortress from which to defend the Kingdom of Navarra.

The area already had the presence of populations even in prehistoric times, as evidenced by the La Hoya site and other archaeological remains, but the origin of La-Guardia dates back to the 10th century. Two centuries later it obtained jurisdiction thanks to Sancho VI from Navarra, nicknamed the Wise. In the 13th century the town was fortified, adding to its three main streets, alleys and squares a solid wall that had four access doors. The Nueva or Carnicerías door was opened in the 15th century; in this same century Laguardia would be integrated into the Brotherhood of Álava by mandate of the Catholic Monarchs.

The following belong to its jurisdiction:

  1. El Campillar: Its hamlet is next to the Ebro, surrounded by vineyards. It has an impressive thousand-year-old oak.
  2. Páganos: In the administrative board of Páganos, the Church of the Assumption of the 16th century with a Renaissance portal and altarpiece and the house of Juan de Ortiz de Zárate that bear the coat of arms with the legend “The world is ansí” that gave title to a Baroja novel.
  3. Laserna: Small population center where the Mantible bridge stands out, over the Ebro. It still maintains two of the six arches it originally had. A few meters before entering the town you can see the remains of the Assa Castle, which disappeared in the 14th century.

These geographical circumstances give this area a characteristic landscape and climate; and they have decisively marked its history and the character of its people.
